I recently moved into a cottage in a garden in Oakland, California, inspired by the gardener's childhood home in the Ecuadorian mountains. I modeled this bas relief landscape in 3D software and machined the aluminum on an automatic CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine. I used my programming skills to direct the carving tool in very specific ways to generate a wide variety of textures and depth, from mirror flat areas to represent water to highly textured patterns to represent rocks in a mountain. In this way, I transformed the machine into a three-dimensional painting tool.
